Karka Sankranti marks the beginning of the monsoon. It also marks the end of the Uttarayana period and the beginning of Dakshinayana. It is believed that one day in God’s life equals to an year in human life. Thus, Dakshinayana marks the beginning of night for the Gods; they sleep during these six months. The day is observed to eliminate all negative facets from one’s life. However, no new venture should be commenced, as the day is not considered to be very auspicious.

Devotees take a bath during sunrise, which is believed to wash away all their sins. They also hold a fast and consume only Saatvik food. Lord Vishnu and the Sun God are worshipped for attaining a blessed life. Lord Varaha Swami (third incarnation of Lord Vishnu) is also revered. Pitra Tarpan is considered to provide eternal divine peace to our ancestors’ souls if performed on Karka Sankranti. Giving away food, clothes, etc. to the poor is also believed to be extremely fruitful.
